Chapter 21

Marcus

A couple of days had passed, and it was now the weekend. Cheryl, Shawn, Riana and I were heading to Houston for my mom’s birthday party. I was putting some clothes into an overnight bag when Shawn walked into my room. He gave me a dreaded look while tapping his foot on the carpet.

“You do know we were supposed to have left 30 minutes ago.”

“I know. I had some last-minute reading to do.”

“Don’t you think you should be hitting the books more instead of being with Cheryl?”

I smirked at Shawn and threw a pair of socks at him. He ducked, letting them fall on the floor.

“Please, like you don’t spend all your time with Ri.”

“I’m just kidding, bro. Anyway, Ri told me what you did for Cheryl. That was pretty nice. You don’t even let me borrow money.”

“Because you never asked.”

“That is true.”

“Is the reservation set at the hotel?”

“Yes, I did it already. Two connecting rooms.”

“Just making sure. You sometimes can be very forgetful with things.”

“That’s you majority of the time.”

I smirked at Shawn again and closed my bag.

Usually, when we all went home, we would stay with our parents, while Riana and Cheryl would go stay at Riana’s moms; but since my mom’s party was a surprise, she didn't know we’d be in town. She thinks our dad is taking her out to dinner for her birthday. So Shawn and I decided to rent two rooms for the weekend.

“I thought Jayden was coming, too? I said.

“He’s still coming, but he has to go to a team meeting this afternoon. He and Britney will leave afterward,” Shawn said.

Since Shawn had been dating Riana, he, Jayden, and I had become really good friends. And since our families were so close, I actually considered him as another brother.

“Okay, let’s go get our girls and get on the road,” I said, grabbing my bag.

Shawn smiled and picked up his bag from the couch as we headed towards the door. I locked it, then turned to him, thinking it was time to tell him my plan.

“Remember that business venture I was telling you about?”

Shawn went over to his car, popped the trunk and put his bag in.

“Yeah. You were thinking about opening up a club, right?”

“Yeah. I’m thinking about going forward with it. I love being an accountant, but I feel like I should do more with myself and actually do something I really want to pursue. While I was in my Organizational Behavior and Management class, my professor asked us where we saw ourselves in 10 years. Are we still at the same jobs, doing the same mundane thing each and every day, or are we doing something we desired? Something we had our hearts set on and were determined enough to go out and do it? That’s something I've thought about since then, and I realized it’s time to really consider my dream.”

“I think that’s great. Besides, opening a club will generate a lot of business, especially if you promote it right.
